Embedding Videos into Questions

You can place a YouTube video inside a Cognexo question, so users watch it and answer in the same place.

There’s no hyperlink to YouTube, no extra browser tab and no reason to skip the content and go straight to the answers.

As you can see in the above example, users are asked to watch the video and answer a question based on the video.

How to embed a video:

This guide walks you through embedding a video in a question, step by step.

Using YouTube as an example, find the video you want to embed.

  • Just below the video, click on the Share button:

In the pop-up, select <> Embed

Note: Rather than embed the video in a question, if you would prefer to hyperlink a video, press Copy below the symbols.

Also, if you tick the Start at box, you can set the video to begin at a particular point

The above pop-up will appear

  • Tick the Start at box if you do not want the video to start from the beginning. If so, amend 0.01 to the time at which you want the video to start.
Note: Embedded videos do not show adverts and so 0.01 is the start of the content.
  • Tick Show player controls if you want viewers get the normal YouTube experience (pause, skip around, change volume, turn on subtitles, go full screen, and so on).
  • By ticking Enable privacy-enhanced mode YouTube says it won't store information about visitors to your page just because the video is there. Tracking generally only kicks in once someone actually plays the video. Views in this mode also won't influence the viewer's YouTube recommendations or watch history in the same way.
  • Click on Copy in the bottom right-hand corner
  • Past the text into the Question Text box:
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes

Note: After creating the question, you might want to alter the start time of the video. The easiest way to do that is go to start=1 in the pasted test and adjust the number to the second you want the video to begin:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ejY31B867N4?si=MtHuW2OaGjRvkedL&amp;start=1" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Where it works well:

  • Regulatory and policy explainers. As in the Competition Law example above, a short official clip sets the context before the question tests it.
  • Messages from leadership. A short clip from a senior leader on a new strategy or change, followed by a question that checks the key message landed.
  • Product and process demonstrations. Show how something works, then ask people to put the steps in order or choose the right next action.
  • Scenarios. Play a short customer or workplace situation and ask what should happen next

Tips for adding videos:

  • Keep it short. Clips of a minute or two suit the rhythm of a daily question. If the video is longer, use the start point to go straight to the relevant section.
  • Check it will play. The video needs to be public or unlisted on YouTube. Private videos won’t play for your people.
  • Check it’s suitable to share. Make sure the content is appropriate for your workforce and comes from a source your organisation is comfortable using.
  • Choose videos with captions where you can. People can follow along without sound – useful in open offices, on the move and for accessibility.
  • Write the question around the video. Ask about something the clip actually covers, so the answer tells you whether people watched and understood it.
